Information & Communication TechnologyMy technical journey started in 1977, as a curious teenager, building a computer from circuit board plans. Destiny sent me to the signal corps for military conscription service, and gave me access to sophisticated equipment. My first connection to the Internet was in 1982, using an acoustic coupler over HF, sending Morse code packets, to distant correspondents. Hooked. In 1983 I started working as a computer operator for a progressive bank, using medium and mainframe computers. Late night shifts facilitated access to modern computing, and punch card readers. My first COBOL program was designed to make money, and it did. By the end of 1983 I was importing the first Mac and IBM personal computers into South Africa. By 1984 I was monetizing my first business, showing companies how to computerize their accounting books. My global travels started in 1986, exploring the world, living in 14 different countries, building businesses and consulting along the way. Helping companies large and small transition to the Internet. Established the first Internet Café in Geneva, Switzerland circa 1994. Developed an Internet training syllabus that trained many, including UN organizations, ILO, WHO, and NGOs. As a devout capitalist, my interest was in online commerce, and I started focusing on affiliate marketing. Moved to the United States in 1998 and rode the Dot Com wave. Prospered and crashed, like many others, but we learned a lot along the way. In 2003, I returned to South Africa, and built a successful Managed Services Provider, serving remote clients all the way from Cape Town through to North Africa. I sold my business interests and some intellectual property, and retired comfortably at the age of 50. A three-year sabbatical in the Bush ensued. Coming back stronger than ever, constantly sponging up new technologies, I’m building on 40+ years of business and ICT experience. With a comprehensive understanding of the entire ICT lifecycle, I consider myself uniquely placed as an ITC Strategist. From analyzing lines of code, server clustering, complex networking designs, cloud services, tapping into big data, security, disaster recovery, and combating industrial sabotage. Keeping intellectual property protected. I’m extremely “hands-on” and manage my own servers with 50+ initiative websites. Expertly qualified when talking tech with developers, and quite comfortable in any boardroom. As an experienced business owner, I can help senior management understand the quickest, most effective, and economical way, to a successful ICT strategy, all while incorporating the latest AI developments. Once the ICT issues are resolved and enhanced, I can show companies how to create additional revenue streams. Transforming most ICT expenditure, to the profit column.
